Inquiries seeking employment should be no different by e-mail than if they were on formal stationary when it comes to the level of formality that should be used. Informality and lack of attention to details just because you are using e-mail can be the fatal mistake that causes your inquiry to be sent to trash.
First, you need to take the time to create your inquiries to be tailored specifically to the company you are approaching. Generic mass mailings that can apply to any job at any company are viewed as just that – generic. And even lazy.
Recruiters can view unsolicited e-mail submissions as too informal and unprofessional. When up against those who take the time to create a formal cover letter on quality paper which includes a properly created resume targeted to the appropriate individual — e-mail is simply not as impressive.
Unless you know the company you are contacting is accepting resumes by e-mail, because they state as much on their site, do not assume your submission will be welcomed. In cases where specific instructions or a submission form are not offered, make the effort to send a hard copy professional letter via snail mail.
To impress means you stand out from all the others who are not willing to make extra effort and included details and information that reflect you aren’t mass mailing anyone just to get any position.
Go to the Websites of the organizations you are targeting. Take the time to learn all you can about the company to include some of that as your reasons of interest in your cover letter.
Look for the name of the specific person you should e-mail with your employment inquiry and follow their instructions on how to do so to the letter! This will reflect whether you are able and/or willing to pay attention to detail and make extra efforts when required.
Otherwise, pick up the old fashioned telephone and get that name so you can send your information to the right person. To blindly e-mail could create not only a poor first impression but by many corporate HR folks it is viewed as taking the easy way out.
Taking the time to make a good impression is time well spent — and could get you that job!
