A site visitor was curious and pondered:
Any etiquette tips about declining invitations to “chat” or “connect” with someone?
Tailor your response based on if you know the person or not. If you know them, you can simply let them know you are busy and let them know when a good time to chat would be.
When it comes to declining invitations from those you don’t know (I don’t get that anyway but it does happen…) a simple but courteous reply such as “I’m sorry, I am not interested at this time — but thank you for contacting me.” will do just fine.
I do have an entire “courtesy” on IM (Instant Messaging) considerations on my site @:
How do you handle chat requests?
