Phishing 101

March 3, 2009 by Judith

What is Phishing?

phishing: n
the practice of luring unsuspecting Internet users to a fake Web site by using authentic-looking email with the real organization’s logo, in an attempt to steal passwords, financial or personal information, or introduce a virus attack; the creation of a Web site replica for fooling unsuspecting Internet users into submitting personal or financial information or passwords

“There’s a sucker born every minute”
~ P.T. Barnum

Common sense does not go out the door when one is online. Just because a Web site states a certain thing (or what you want to see) doesn’t make it valid or true.

Because an e-mail lands in your inbox doesn’t necessarily mean it is who it appears to be from or legitimate. Second guess and double-check any offer or request you receive unless you are 1000% sure it is from someone you know and the e-mail is expected.

Read up and learn about Phishing so you are not the next one to get the hook (sorry, couldn’t help myself!). PayPal Phishing Guide gives you an extensive 101 covering eveything you need to know, look for and be concerned about.

Read and learn!
