Anyone who posts to any of my Blogs or e-mails me knows that unlike many sites or Bloggers, I do in fact respond promptly and personally.
The exception being I’ve had no choice but to have an autoreponder in place to let those who e-mail me without reviewing my site or reading the text at the top of my question page (believe me I can’t be any clearer) that a response will not be forthcoming. The multitude of daily e-mail inquiries about wedding, gift, anniversary, baby shower, funeral or other off-line etiquette issues receive no personal response.
For those inquiries that are about e-mail etiquette, I do respond personally, in detail and point by point to ensure the questions asked get answers that are clear and concise. Promoting E-mail Etiquette is sort of my community service effort to help contribute in a positive way to the online environment.
Unfortunately, I am continually surprised to find that a healthy portion of these inquiries practice no e-mail etiquette whatsoever. They have a specific question, usually because someone pointed out the errs of their way and they are relying on me to back them up — prove them right. Wrong.
Not only that, when I advise in a polite and informational manner the lack of e-mail etiquette missing from their communication to me — someone whom they are asking to take the time to assist them — Katie bar the doors!
If you e-mail an “e-mail etiquette expert” for advice, be prepared to get advice. If you e-mail an e-mail etiquette expert and use absolutely no e-mail etiquette, expect to be pointed to the resources, articles and posts that cover for you what you still seem to be missing.
And when this happens, don’t hit reply and start yelling back profanities and start name calling — that too my friend is poor e-mail etiquette!
