Are You a 2 X 4 in E-mail?

I have a saying I use on occasion; “They have the personality of a 2 X 4!” Which in essence means no personality at all.

Many don’t take the time to show their personality and style in their e-mails.

Read your e-mail out-loud before you hit Send. Does your e-mail sound robotic or curt? Are you just blurting out what you want to say, or are you typing in such a way as to encourage a conversation?

When e-mailing, feel free to show your personality in your writing style! How do you do that? Simple — just type as if you were face-to-face and talking with the person on the other side.

Why is this extra effort important? Because it lends to nurturing relationships and avoiding miscommunications. For example, I have one client that is extremely dry and terse in his e-mails. There are times I have wondered what he is mad about. If you didn’t know him personally you may even assume he is a jerk. But he isn’t! He is the nicest guy you would want to meet. Every time I’ve met him for a meeting, I am pleasantly reminded about how nice and funny he is!!

By not reflecting his personality in his e-mails, I think he is missing out on folks getting to know what a neat guy he is. Unfortunately, he risks turning off those who don’t know him well yet, or have not or may never meet him in person. People prefer to communicate with those that seem friendly and approachable (especially in Business E-mail!). Don’t you?

Taking the time to add your personality let’s those who don’t know you discover what a neat person you are too!

Reading your post makes me wonder if it’s possible a person has different inner and outer personalities ? People tend to be nice and friendly when meeting face-to-face because psychologically, they care about their reputation as people know their faces. However, behind the computer, they reveal their inner personality because psychologically, they tend to think people can’t see their faces. Thanks for reading.

      Hey, Leon:

You are correct! Folks hide behind the safety (and in my case with this site, the anonymity) they have behind these screens where they don’t have to make eye-to-eye contact when making comments or statements they wouldn’t otherwise make face-to-face. Sad but true…

Appreciate you stopping by and sharing your POV!
